TLDT: Powdercoat setup - $203
Powder gun - $180
Powder - $7
shipping - $16
I’ve talked with a few people and there seems to be some interest in powder coating at the hive, since we are limited in size (parts must fit in Charlie the craft oven) I figured one of the smaller “beginners kits” would fit us best
Why powder coat? powder coating is much more durable than paint, resistant to many solvents, has a wide variety of colors, and is much easier and safer to apply than traditional solvent based spray cans
Tool requirements:
Ventilation - current spray booth is adequate
Compressed air - the portable compressor can be used, it only requires 10psi and low cfm
Bake - Charlie can reach all common powder temps
Powder - supplied by user
Certification - it is not my belief that certification would be required, however i am happy to offer if deemed necessary
I propose we purchase a Eastwood HotCoat® PCS-250 Dual Voltage Powder Coating Gun Starter Kit -$180
reviews are positive, and many of the drawbacks I’ve seen are related to large parts and multiple coats, something I don’t believe we will have the need to do, and can’t overcome for a much larger price. This kit also includes additional powder storage, as well as high temp masking tape and silicone plugs for protecting threaded holes
As well as Eastwood HotCoat® Powder Coat High Gloss Jet Black - 1lb - $7
that will give us a bit of “hive supply” for those who want to learn or experiment. (1lb will cover a LOT of surface area)
overall, I think this would greatly expand out capabilities in the finishing department, specifically high durability applications
(look at the #painting_finishing slack for an example of how nice it can turn out even with outdated borrowed equipment)
