Protip: Close ALL the blast gates

If you’ve been using the woodshop, and wondering why you’re still getting a mess despite having turned on dust collection, check the gates. I’ve come in a few times, and each time there are multiple gates open. If you leave them open you’re going to be creating more mess you’ll have to clean up at the end of the night.

If anybody wants a walk through of where all the gates are, I’ll probably be at the Tuesday meeting.

What about giving them a spritz of a high viz paint or a bright ribbon around the hose to make them easier to locate, as well?
I recall a rag bag at a nearby thrift store that had some high viz yellow shirts in it.

Not a bad idea, I think we’ve got some high vis spray paint in the cabinet. I’ll see what I can do.

It occurs to me that anybody looking for an interesting electronics project could also wire up a light or another indicator to turn on whenever this is more than 1 gate open, or no gates open.

If all blast gates are closed, wouldn’t that create zero suction?

No, I won’t put electronic sensors on. However, I could rig up a display that lights an unconnected indicator which confuses the operator and forces them to check the blast gates like they should anyway.

It will create max suction, and according to the manual it could collapse the ducting! Not a problem in our case, but you can definitely see some strain on the flex tubing.

LOL, or how about I put up a sign.

LOL, or how about I put up a sign.

Hang a sign covering the DC power switch, so that it would have to be moved out of the way
to turn on the DC: “Check ALL 6 Blast Gates!” (or however many there are…)
