Old Hardware Disposal System

Dave has created a wiki page for us to update with our system for disposing of old hardware.

http://wiki.hive13.org/index.php?title=Junk_Rules

We had said that we would discuss this in the mailing list. With the party coming up this is a rather pressing issue.

I haven't seen any discussion of /where/ to take electronic waste.
Some of you undoubtedly know this already, but Hamilton County
sponsors an electronics recycling program at TRG (in Kenwood now -
used to be in St. Bernard).

Now that I look at it, it says no business or non-profit items, but
when ever I've taken items there, they have not asked a lot of questions.

FYI, there is also a hazardous waste disposal drop-off down the street
on Spring Grove. I usually take paint and motor oil there.

In a totally unrelated note, that Etch-A-Sketch video was awesome.

On 8/19/2009 1:19 PM Paul claimed:

This has been mentioned several times in meetings: http://www.cincinnaticomputercooperative.org/

They take Computers, CRT’s, and computer peripherals. They list all the stuff they take on their site, and the stuff they do not take as well.

I agree. The "Junk Rules" for getting rid of stuff and the "Where to
get rid of it" aspect are two separate, though closely related,
problems.

I have begun to compile a list of places to take equipment, and a
project on my todo list is to research these places and evaluate them.

As part of the "Free Geek Cincinnati" idea, I would like to see
equipment responsibly recycled rather than thrown in the dumpster.

Here is a thread where I've collected a few links on the Free Geek mailing list:

And here is the area on the wiki where I've been stashing stuff:

Not very organized right now I admit. But a good project to dive into
for someone with some time on their hands. Maybe someone could make a
simple table listing and comparing the different recyclers?

I started to fill in a wiki page: http://wiki.hive13.org/index.php?title=Resource_Disposal

I don't get it! Why would we need to know this? To get junk from them?

This is just a reminder that we are planning on voting on this system at this weeks business meeting: http://wiki.hive13.org/index.php?title=Junk_Rules

So if you have anything you want to change about it, then now is the time to bring it up for discussion.
