But the question is: Will our alternate power solution power the lock for 6 days?
Another thing to note is that while yes we have been talking about the various fun methods to lock the building, another constant has been the fact that we would also need to have a physical key solution as well.
If the power goes out for several hours in a row, then we would just use the physical keys to unlock the building.
if the electronic solution is simply a stepper motor to turn the deadbolt, and all of the authentication is simply to decide when to turn said motor, then keys and whatnot will still work in the event of power failure or a zombie apocalypse.
Ok, so maybe we’ll do a keypad lock. We can have mulitiple combinations, some have free ingress and time settings and they are a bit cheaper than the biometric ones. This is the route the landlords will be going. Here is one model I was looking at:
Plus, check this out… the KnockLock… you can hide the knockLock behind walls and what not…you knock the combo on the wall to unlock the device. Like the Fonz!! B-)
I was actually thinking of creating a wiki page for this lock discussion.
I see it as having a couple phases:
Move In (1-3 weeks after move in)
Keys, sit down and discuss in the space how we want to lock it.
Temporary (1-2 months after move in)
A temporary solution, maybe keep using the keys or maybe we implement some computer driven method involving magstripe cards.
Final (3+ months after move in)
Long term solution, in my mind that would ideally be a fingerprint lock.
