There’s been a lot of open-source development for 3D printer software over the last decade or so! I’ve only done minimal tinkering with the software, but my impression is: 1) it’s pretty complex with lots of components, and 2) community openness and documentation makes it easier. The major software parts are the firmware running on your printer’s microcontroller (Marlin, Repetier-Firmware etc); the host software on your computer (Repetier-host, prontrface, etc); and the slicing program that turns a 3-D file into printer g-code (Slic3r, skeinforge, etc)
