PROPOSAL: Clean CAD computer and install Deep Freeze

If there’s software users want on the computer then it’s easy enough to request it and have it included in the freeze.

Freezing ensures that the machine is fool proof. No matter what the user does, the machine reboots. They can even go after system files and the system reboots.

I propose that we (me or someone else) puts in a new cheap reasonably sized SSD and that we clone the existing drive to it. We inspect the security suite so see if we are being overly cautious and can tone it back or if there is a different security solution that is better. And then we just see if it simply resoles the issues. If it does, high five. If it doesn't we proceed with the reinstall and argue over some kind of deep freeze or block level backup solution.

There's a bunch of crap on that computer which has no need to be there. We should be starting from a known good state. Reinstalling windows and software doesn't take long and would be that known good state.

Deep Freeze allows us to start from that known good state and manage the inclusion of software on the system, ensuring that it updates properly and cleanly and doesn't conflict with something else on the system.

I'm gonna back down. I don't even have a pony in a race other than my own occasional use observation.

The program Pepakura designer has a paid license that I donated to the hive ages ago. I dont have access to the account with the license key. If you do any form of a reboot please record that key or keep the program.

I don’t think that machine has been rebuilt since I have been at the hive. Which, for a community windows machine…

Just throwing that out there…
